Bug Experiences & Events

The Backyard Bug Experience is a small family run company which was established in 2022.

We have a passion for all sort of creatures. Sadly, invertebrates are much overlooked in the animal kingdom and our goal is to highlight their importance within the larger eco system and to show that there is no reason to be scared of bugs.

We aim to bring the fabulous world of invertebrates to Schools, Care Homes or any other events you may be holding. These include birthday parties, educational talks, school visits, team building, holiday camps and group / club visits. Our experiences are tailor made for your needs.

EXPERIENCES

Millipede

Archispirostreptus Gigas (Giant African Millipede) grow to around 30cm and live for 7-10 years. They live in more forested / wooded areas of Africa and help to break down plant matter and return the nutrients to the soil.

Praying Mantis

We have many different species. There are a huge number of different species from all over the world. We love our mantis. They are amazing hunters equipped with large forelegs which are used to catch and grip their prey. They eat just about anything they can catch. They have huge eyes and turn their head to look at you! Unfortunately, they don’t live very long, only about 18 months.

Stick Insects

We keep a variety of stick insects from all over the world. Some of the ones we like to keep are Extatosoma Tiaratum (Spiny Leaf Insect). These are from Australia. We also keep Heteropteryx Dilatate (or Malayan Jungle Nymph). These guys are massive. Stick insects, as the name suggests, look like vegetation and can blend seamlessly into their environment. They have a lifespan of up to 2 years and feed on vegetation.

Katydids & Grasshoppers

We keep a variety of katydids, crickets and grasshoppers. One of our larger species of katydid is Siliquofera Grandis (Giant Hooded Katydid). It is huge at about 15cm in length and comes from New Guinea and surrounds. They are herbivorous and live for about 2 years. We also keep Pseudoproscopia Scarab (Horsehead Hrasshopper) from South America and are a weird looking grasshopper. They grow to about 20cm and look more like a stick insect with a horse-like head.

Spiders

We mostly keep different species of tarantulas. Some of our favourites are the massive Lasiodora Parahybana (Brazilian Salmon Pink Bird Eating Spider) which is thought to the fourth largest tarantula in the world. We also keep Brachypelma Hamorii (Mexican Red Knee Tarantula). These are a beautiful species with lovely reddish knees. Female tarantulas can live up to 30 years, however males only live for 5 years. They eat other bugs.
